The island village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio, has banned ATVs from the community from May through October to prevent companies from renting the four-wheelers to tourists.

Village Councilman Jeff Koehler told WTVG-TV that the ordinance was “precautionary.”

He said ATVs are not an issue right now.

“What it hurt was the Islanders who have ATVs and use them to get to work, go to the grocery store and all that kind of stuff,” Koehler said.

Golf carts are permitted on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, where Put-in-Bay is situated. And ATVs will be permitted during winter months, when residents use them for ice fishing and other activities.
