AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST DECEMBER 2018
AMA opposes year-round sales of E15 fuel
Change Jeopardizes Availability Of Safe Fuels For Motorcyclists
The AMA disagrees with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allowing year-round sales of E15 fuel.
The policy change, announced in October, would allow waivers for the sale of E15 (fuel containing up to 15 percent ethanol by volume) during the summer months. Previously, E15 sales have been prohibited from June through September because of air quality concerns.
None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs in use in this country is certified by the EPA to use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. Allowing additional E15 sales increases the risk of inadvertent misfueling by motorcyclists.
In addition, as E15 begins to permeate the marketplace, the AMA is concerned the spread will further reduce the availability of the E0 (no ethanol) fuel preferred by many motorcyclists and required for older machines.
The widespread acceptance and availability of E10 fuel already has made E0 difficult to find outside of marinas, where it is popular with boat operators.
This decision by the EPA reduces choice for motorcyclists and ATV riders.
The AMA supports legislation that would reform the Renewable Fuels Act in a way that ensures safe fuels are available for owners of motorcycles, ATVs and other vehicles and equipment.
