AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST DECEMBER 2018

State Coordinators, Volunteers Contribute In 2018

10 State Coordinators, Thousands Of Volunteers Supporting Recreational Programs, Advocacy

The AMA recognizes the enormous contribution that volunteers made to the organization’s recreational programming and advocacy efforts in 2018. In addition to the efforts of the growing list of state coordinators, the AMA brought onboard in 2018 thousands of volunteers who donated their time and talents to support AMA government relations initiatives and recreational programming.

State Coordinators

AMA State Coordinators were appointed in Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin in 2018, according to AMA State Chapters and Volunteer Manager Marie Wuelleh.

State coordinators work with the AMA, individual AMA members and AMA District membership, to promote recreational motorcycle riding in their states. They also recognize challenges and threats to motorcycling and the motorcycle lifestyle, disseminate information and identify opportunities for AMA volunteers to make a difference in the motorcycling and greater community.

State coordinators attended about 130 public meetings in 2018 and lobbied state regulatory bodies and lawmakers on a wide range of issues, such as public land access, public trail planning and road safety.

Several coordinators also helped manage and lead road rides.

Volunteers

In addition to the many AMA members who contacted their elected officials and spoke up for motorcyclists at public meetings in 2018, thousands of volunteers helped staff hundreds of AMA-sanctioned recreational events.

The AMA’s newly-expanded presence at 2018 Daytona Bike Week would not have been possible without strong volunteer support.

In its first year with two locations at Daytona Bike Week, the AMA welcomed a corps of 32 volunteers who stepped up to keep the locations staffed throughout the 10-day event.

Daytona Bike Week was also the first stop on the 2018 AMA National Gypsy Tour.

Volunteers played important roles at other Gypsy Tour events, as well. Nine of the 15 Gypsy Tour locations were staffed entirely by volunteers in 2018.

They were also instrumental in making 2018 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days a success. About 40 volunteers assisted AMA staff members with setting up the event, and staffed tents and displays in the Old Bike Barn Crossroads during the annual fundraiser for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
