New Mexico town allows ATVs on streets
Truth Or Consequences Repeal Referendum Fails
After the Truth or Consequences, N.M., City Council passed an ordinance in 2018 allowing ATVs on city streets, a group of citizens organized a referendum petition seeking to repeal the ordinance.
After a month-long special election through the mail, city voters favored keeping the ordinance in place.
“This is a win for motorized tourism in Truth or Consequences and New Mexico,” said Dean Tulk, president of the AMA-chartered New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance and a city resident. “We look forward to working with T or C and other communities across the state to bring positive recreational opportunities for all ages.”
Under the ordinance, ATV riders may operate on city streets if:
• It is equipped with a headlight and taillight, brakes, mirrors and mufflers;
• The operator holds a valid driver’s license or permit;
• The operator is insured as required by state law; and
• The operator is wearing eye protection.
Riders younger than 18 must wear a helmet and complete an off-highway motor vehicle safety training course.
