Bill would cap ethanol

H.R. 2540, the bipartisan Food and Fuel Consumer Protection Act of 2019, introduced by U.S. Reps. Bill Flores (R-Texas) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.), would cap the volume of ethanol blended into the nation’s fuel supply at 9.7 percent of the total volume of gasoline.

The AMA supports this bill because it would reduce the availability of E15 in the marketplace by reforming the Renewable Fuel Standard.

By capping the enthanol mandate and restricting the amount of E15 fuel that the federal government can allow into the market, this bill would help ensure the availability of safe fuels, such as E10 and ethanol-free gasoline (E0) for older motorcycles.

“The AMA, along with its partners on Capitol Hill, is dedicated to protecting motorcyclists from the adverse effects of E15,” said Michael Sayre, AMA on-highway government affairs manager. “We are working to generate more support for this bill and others at a time when E15 is set to become more available throughout the country, thanks the Environmental Protection Agency allowing year-round E-15 sales.”

In addition, new rules expand the availability of E15 in other ways, further increasing misfueling risk (see “Bad Ethanol Deal Reached,” next page).

Running E15 in vehicles not designed for it can damage the engine and void manufacturer’s warranties.
