AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST December 2019
It’s 10 now for Janniro
Speedway Rider Wins Record 10th AMA Speedway National Championship
Billy Janniro is no stranger to winning AMA National No. 1 plates, but the one he earned Sept. 21 at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn, Calif., has put him in a class of his own.
The 39-year-old from Winters, Calif., is the only speedway racer to amass 10 AMA Speedway National Championships. He surpassed the previous record of eight in 2018, which had been held by FIM Speedway World Champion Greg Hancock.
“It’s an awesome feeling knowing that it’s going to take a lot of winning to beat that number,” Janniro said. “It was unreal when I got my ninth title last year, but [reaching] double digits seems untouchable.”
Janniro finished the three-round 2019 AMA Speedway National Championship Series with 59 points, winning the title by 13 points over Max Ruml. Gino Manzaras finished in third place with 36 points.
The first two rounds of the series took place June 15 at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, Calif., and Aug. 10 at The Grand Arena in City of Industry, Calif.
Janniro said the 2019 season didn’t really stand out for him. He and his team have a goal to win the title every year they compete.
While Janniro has won the last seven consecutive AMA Speedway National Championships, he knows talented racers are coming up through the speedway ranks.
“Next year, we have a few fast kids stepping up from the juniors,” he said. “If Anthony Dion doesn’t stop getting better and better every week, he will be a guy to look out for.”
