I had the opportunity to test a Schuberth C4 Pro modular helmet, in exactly my size and the color I like best: black. After a couple months of wearing it on several rides, some of them quite long, I can report that this is one of the best helmets I’ve ever owned, and I’ve been riding now for just short of 60 years.

The C4 Pro is the most comfortable, warmest (it was quite cold in northern California this winter), least drafty, quietest and lightest feeling helmet I’ve owned. I must have 15 helmets kicking around, some others are also top of the line, and these days I only wear this Schuberth.

The details are beautifully worked out, from the ease of employing the shield and sun-shield, to the effortless chin strap and venting controls.

The modular function works flawlessly. The utility of that feature performs exactly as intended.

One thing is very important to note: when I first put it on, it seemed too tight. If I’d been shopping for it, I would probably have bought the next size up— but because it was labeled the correct size for my head (and returning it wasn’t really an option), I stuck with it. That’s the advice you always hear—to buy a helmet that starts out a little tight, because in theory it loosens up to fit your head perfectly.

Well, I am here to tell you that they’re right. I think one reason the Schuberth is so comfortable now, and yet so quiet and draft-free, is because I pushed through the first few hours of it feeling a little too tight. I encourage everyone to follow that common directive from the manufacturers. Now the Schuberth C4 feels as if it were molded to my head.—Perry King
