Ed Waldheim’s Gold Wing donated to Hall of Fame

Linda Waldheim, the widow of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Ed Waldheim, has donated Ed’s 1977 Honda Goldwing to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

The motorcycle arrived at the Hall of Fame in April, in the midst of Ohio’s coronavirus lockdown.

The Goldwing has a Vetter Windjammer with the original and rare lower extensions specific to that model, fabricated mounts for Samsonite suitcases as saddlebags, a trailer hitch, and tons of AMA stickers.

Linda said Ed put many miles on it over the years, including completing the Southern California Motorcycling Association’s Three Flags Classic twice.

The rally takes riders through parts of Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We did many rides together on this bike,” she said.

“In the 1980s, [Ed] even loaned it to a young motorcycle police officer, Martin Cripps, from England, to travel the U.S.,” Linda said. “We actually later went to England for Martin’s wedding to Jayne after a few visits with them, and they and their two sons are like family today.”

Ed bought a newer Goldwing, but continued to ride the ‘77 on short trips, even after he was diagnosed with cancer and the doctor said, “No more motorcycling.”

“He always promoted AMA, especially with his AMA stickers that he had on the bike,” Linda said. “It was my decision to donate the bike to the Hall of Fame museum after Rob Dingman and I talked about his recent AMA [magazine] article about vintage motorcycles.”

Ed Waldheim passed away in December.

“Ed was awarded the Unser ‘Never Give Up’ award at the last Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Inductee ceremony, of which Ed is an inductee, in November, 2019,” Linda said. “He died about a month later, on Dec. 9.

“Ed never gave up on his dedication to motorcycling, off-road and road. He would be very touched and honored to know his loved ‘77 motorcycle is in the AMA Hall of Fame museum where he is an inductee for all his past efforts.”

Careful shipping required

When Linda Waldheim decided to donate her late husband’s 1977 Honda Goldwing to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Federal Motorcycle Transport stepped up to handle transportation of the bike from the Waldheim home in California to the AMA campus near Columbus, Ohio.

Jennifer Gibbs, Federal manager, said the Goldwing made it to Ohio in about one week, using the company’s standard 9-foot-by-4-foot pallet.

“If a bike has been customized and longer than 108 inches or sits too low,  the customer would need to provide a pallet, because the bike would not fit properly on our skids for safe transport,” Gibbs said.

AMA members receive a discount on Federal services.
