Loretta Lynn’s Ranch Hosts Event For 36th-Straight Year
Thirty-five AMA No. 1 plates were won by 28 riders at the 2018 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil, held July 30-Aug. 4 at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.
The event’s biggest winner was Derek Drake of San Luis Obispo, Calif., who was awarded the 2018 Nicky Hayden AMA Motocross Horizon Award. Drake won two class titles on his way to receiving the award, which recognizes the rider best prepared for the professional ranks, based on attitude, enthusiasm and past performances as an amateur.
Other AMA award winners from the event organized by MX Sports included 2018 AMA Motocross Racer of the Year Jalek Swoll, 2018 AMA Youth Motocross Racer of the Year Nate Thrasher and 2018 AMA Vet/Senior Motocross Racer of the Year Mike Brown.
Swoll, Thrasher and Brown won two class championships apiece in addition to their AMA awards.
Thrasher had a particularly strong performance, going undefeated in every moto in the Super Mini 1 and Super Mini 2 Classes.
The 28 class-winning riders will be honored at the AMA Championship Banquet on Dec. 8 as part of AMA Legends & Champions Weekend in Columbus, Ohio.
