It’s a good time to buy a helmet. Helmet manufacturers are fiercely competing to engineer innovative new solutions to protect our brains.

Often, the goal of these solutions is to reduce the injuries sustained from rotational acceleration when the head impacts an immovable surface in the event of a crash.

Shoei’s answer is found in its top-shelf off-road and motocross helmet, the VFX-EVO. The technology is called the Motion Energy Distribution System, or MEDS.

At the heart of MEDS are two form-fitting pieces of EPS foam liner in the top of the helmet. Simply stated, the inner piece shifts during impact so that a large amount of the rotational energy is absorbed by perimeter columns of EPS foam rather than the rider’s gray matter.

Further, the EPS liner—that also extends through the chin bar, which is a nice touch—provides impact absorption with varying densities depending on the part of the head it’s protecting. The attention to detail extends to the ventilation channeling throughout the foam liner. It’s comfortable while providing the confidence of a secure fit, and the airflow is exceptional.

Taking heat management even further, the sweat-dissipating liner does a great job keeping your head dry. It’s removable for easy cleaning.

An emergency quick release system allows straightforward removal of the cheek pads in an emergency situation, so the helmet can be removed without causing further trauma to the rider. The release for the removable padding is clearly marked on the side of the helmet and by the red release straps.

The VFX-EVO helps to avoid a crash in the first place with an excellent field of vision and an eyeport that can accommodate the largest of motocross or off-road goggle. Speaking of goggles, the sharp styling is engineered to make sure the straps stay properly positioned in a wide groove around the back of the helmet exterior.

The helmet isn’t loud, but while the large eyeport and 16 vents enhance vision and ventilation, their physical presence naturally hinders sound insulation. This is a good trade for an off-road helmet designed with racing, heat and exertion in mind.

In terms of styling, if you’re a fan of Shoei’s characteristic sharp lines, you will dig the VFX-EVO. This latest helmet executes the edgy motif well. The color schemes range from solids to the clean lines of the Zinger to the expressive Blazon or Grant3.

The helmet comes with a five-year warranty.

The Shoei VFX-EVO is a premium-priced off-road competition helmet that represents one major manufacturer’s contribution to the cutting edge of safety and performance. While it may not be the economical choice for a recreational trail rider, for those riding at the limits of their abilities, competing or who just want top-of-the-line protection, the VFX-EVO is both a stylish and pioneering option.—AMA staff
