Washington state is considering a proposal to exempt electric motorcycles from a $100 annual fee the state has been charging to offset the loss of gas tax revenue.
S.B. 6107, sponsored by state Sens. Christine Rolfes (D-Kitsap) and Mark Mullet (D-Issaquah) adds the words “except for electric motorcycles” to the law that taxes electric vehicles capable of traveling 35 mph or faster on battery power.
The $100 fee is Washington’s attempt to continue to fund highway construction and maintenance as fuel sales decline as a result of increased vehicle efficiency, less driving and the increase in vehicles powered by alternative energy.
