AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST October 2019

Ups + Downs

Up

To Colorado Gov. Jared Polis for declaring Aug. 12 as Colorado Motorcyclist Memorial Day, calling attention to the need for car and truck drivers to be vigilant and watch for motorcyclists, particularly when making left turns.

Up

To the city of Fresno, Calif., for joining a statewide effort to educate drivers about motorcycle safety by monitoring roads and intersections where motorcycle crashes occur more frequently.

Down

To the tire company BFGoodrich for airing a commercial showing a car driver doing doughnuts on the Bonneville Salt Flats, leaving ruts in the fragile crust. The company, which has been owned by Michelin since 1988, hastily issued an apology, but the nonprofit Save the Salt organization requested an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The AMA is part of the Save the Salt Coalition.

Up

To the American Legion Riders of Port Angeles, Wash., who took a 63-year-old Alaskan trucker to Washington, D.C., to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The trucker, Bob Glaves, has been diagnosed with several types of cancer.
