Ohio City Considering OHVs On Streets

Ontario Council To Vote On Measure

The Ontario, Ohio, city council introduced an ordinance in May addressing how off-highway vehicles can be used on streets.

The proposal includes rules for snowmobiles, off-highway motorcycles and “all purpose vehicles,” which includes golf carts.

The ordinance would provide guidelines for where the vehicles can legally operate, require a windshield, rearview mirror, appropriate tires and a braking system. Vehicles also would have to be equipped with working brake lights, headlights, tail lights and turn signals.

Police would inspect vehicles before the city would issue a permit to ride on the streets.

Speed limits for the OHVs would be 35 mph and their use would be restricted to streets with speed limits of 35 mph or lower. Violators would be cited for a minor misdemeanor on the first offense.
