Judge blocks relaxed rules
Energy Change Would Affect Sage Grouse
A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump Administration from easing rules on mining, drilling and grazing on millions of acres in seven western states, saying increases in those activities would likely harm the greater sage grouse, according to an Associated Press report.
The temporary restraining order means the Trump Administration must abide by more stringent rules adopted under the previous administration.
Sage grouse have been in decline for decades due to habitat loss and other factors, and their numbers dropped sharply again this year across much of an 11-state range, the AP reported.
Sage grouse protection also has been cited as a reason for limited access to public lands for responsible motorized recreation.
