Seven volunteer state coordinators have been chosen as part of the AMA State Chapters and Volunteer Network, and AMA staff is working hard to expand the state coordinator ranks significantly by the end of 2018.

Marie Wuelleh, AMA state chapters and volunteer manager, oversees the program.

“We have found excellent state coordinators from among the candidates,” Wuelleh said. “Each one has hit the ground running, and the AMA members in their states have been very supportive.”

The seven coordinators named are Bryan Much in Wisconsin, Jonathan Stone in New Jersey, James Leatherwood in Florida, Ken Harmeyer in Hawaii, Paul Cote in Massachusetts, John Michel in Ohio, and Karen and Tom Umphress (who serve as a team) in Minnesota.

“The goal is to have a coordinator in place for each state,” Wuelleh said.

State coordinators support AMA recreational riding activity on a grassroots level in their states. Much of their work involves promoting the fun of motorcycling, in both organized events as well as individually.

They also work with AMA staff, individual AMA members and AMA Districts to identify challenges and threats to motorcycling and the motorcycle lifestyle in their states.

Their positions also allow them to share information and to find opportunities for AMA volunteers to make a difference, both in the motorcycling community and in society as a whole.

“This is our effort to help AMA members have a stronger voice in their states and give them a chance to get to know other members,” Wuelleh said. “At the same time, AMA State Chapters provide an opportunity to build stronger partnerships with other state motorcycle rights organizations.

“The idea is to support efforts already underway and help get new ideas off the ground,” Wuelleh added. “We are looking for state coordinators who will make the AMA presence known and felt.”

More Representation Needed

While seven state coordinators are a start, more volunteers are needed to represent motorcycling across the country.
